Uzbekistan Launches Comprehensive Athlete Preparation Program for 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 8 July 2025, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed Resolution No. PP-221 “On the Comprehensive Preparation of Uzbek Athletes for the XXXIV Summer Olympic and XVIII Paralympic Games, to be held in 2028 in Los Angeles (USA).”

This document is aimed at the systematic development of national sports, enhancing Uzbekistan’s participation in international competitions, and strengthening the country’s image on the global athletic stage.

The key objectives of the resolution include increasing the number of medals in priority Olympic disciplines such as boxing, judo, taekwondo, freestyle wrestling, and weightlifting; securing licenses in 21 developing sports, including triathlon, volleyball, table tennis, basketball, and modern pentathlon; and actively fostering international cooperation with leading sports organizations and training centers.

To improve preparation efficiency, the classification of sports will be regularly updated and divided into the following categories:

Priority sports — with high medal potential

Promising sports — showing strong development potential

Developing sports — at an early stage of establishment in the country

Starting in 2025, the resolution introduces a new format for national junior and youth championships — a three-stage sports competition series called “Olympic Peaks of New Uzbekistan.”

Athletes participating in these events will be trained by individuals and legal entities licensed to provide regular youth sports training. The final stage of the competition will be held annually at the Olympic Village under the name “Presidential Olympics.”

Athletes selected from the national finals will be sent for further training in the following sports education institutions, serving as a talent pool for the national teams:

1st and 2nd place winners — Republican Center for Olympic and Paralympic Training

3rd place winners — Regional Olympic and Paralympic Training Centers

This list will be reviewed and approved every four years based on the results of the national teams' performances at the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The adoption of this resolution lays a solid legal and organizational foundation for a systemic approach to building competitive national teams and stimulates the development of both grassroots and professional sports in Uzbekistan.
