Uzbekistan detains US citizen accused of terrorist links

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan has detained a returnee with United States citizenship Zokir Aliyev due to his connections with the terrorist group, UzA agency reported on Monday quoting State Security Service.

Zokir Aliyev, born in Uzbekistan, was detained in Kashkadarya region on 16 June, the reported said.

It said Aliyev had been on a state security wanted list since 2005 over his affiliation with the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU), which is banned as terrorist organizations in many countries, including Russia and the United States.

The report said that Zokir Aliev underwent training in Afghanistan and participated in attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Aliev recognized his illegal activities, the report said.
