Uzbekistan demonstrates commitment to international labor standards

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) - An international “round table” on the theme “Decent work in support of reforms” is held in the capital, which discusses topical issues of creating jobs, eliminating forced labor and other aspects.

The event, organized by the upper house of the national parliament, the Ministry of Employment and Labor Relations together with the International Labor Organization (ILO), is attended by members of the Senate and deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis, representatives of the ILO in Uzbekistan, the International Organization for Migration, UNDP, the World Bank, ADB , UNICEF, UNESCO, the diplomatic corps, members of the Cotton Campaign international coalition, as well as the media.

Opening the event, the Chairman of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva noted the intensification of cooperation between Uzbekistan and the ILO in recent years.

“To date, our country has ratified 17 ILO conventions, including all 8 fundamental and 4 policy conventions. In 2019 alone, 3 ILO Conventions and Protocol 29 to the Convention on Forced or Compulsory Labor of 1930 were ratified (Geneva, June 11, 2014). By joining such important international acts, Uzbekistan demonstrates its commitment to comply with international labor standards,” T.Narbaeva said.

During the round table, the agenda discussed issues such as expanding jobs, improving their quality, implementing comprehensive measures to manage the labor market, completely eliminating cases of forced labor during cotton picking in Uzbekistan using the system of “government - employers - trade unions - Civil society activists”.
