Uzbekistan delegation attends UN Human Rights Council session

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- A delegation of the Republic of Uzbekistan led by the director of the National Center for Human Rights Akmal Saidov takes part in the 42nd session of the UN Human Rights Council (HRO) in Geneva. This was reported by the Press Service of the National Center of Uzbekistan for Human Rights.

The event features delegations from over 190 countries at the level of ministers of foreign affairs and justice, heads of national human rights institutions, parliamentarians, diplomats, representatives of academic and expert circles, as well as civil society institutions.

In her speech on the opening day of the Session on 9 September, the UN High Commissioner Michelle Bachelet called for saving humanity from climate change, warning that the consequences of global warming would be catastrophic. Mr. Bachelet emphasized that climate change is a global threat to human rights. This problem concerns everyone without exception and is fraught with new socio-economic upheavals, an increase in the number of armed conflicts, population displacement and even a sharp increase in mortality.

The 42nd session of the Council, which runs until 27 September, will discuss human rights reports in Yemen, Burundi, Myanmar, Syria, Ukraine, Georgia and many other countries. Its participants will consider 90 thematic reports, as well as reports on the situation in individual countries.

On the first day of the Session, the delegation of Uzbekistan also took part in the events of the PRC and Turkmenistan at the invitation of the organizers.

The Chinese side organized an exhibition on the country’s achievements in the field of human rights over the past 70 years, which presents photographs and infographics with the results of the development of industry, agriculture and infrastructure, reforms in the field of education and health, the implementation of measures to ensure political, economic, social and cultural rights.

The Permanent Mission of Turkmenistan held a meeting dedicated to the upcoming 20-21 November, in Ashgabat to the Economic Forum of the UN Special Economic Program for Central Asian Economies, UNECE (SPECA) on trade and transport facilitation for sustainable development in the region.

 During the meeting, the delegation of Uzbekistan made a brief statement in which they welcomed the efforts of the Turkmen side as the presiding country, as well as the productivity of the activities carried out under this program.

The meeting participants also welcomed the holding of the 23rd session of the SPECA Working Group on Water, Energy and the Environment in Tashkent on 11–13 September.

Currently, there is a process of promoting the candidacy of Uzbekistan to the UN Human Rights Council for 2021-2023 and the Executive Committee of the Inter-Parliamentary Union. As part of this promotion, as well as to inform about the upcoming elections of the Oliy Majlis in the republic, the delegation of Uzbekistan held a number of meetings on the sidelines of the conference on its first day.

In particular, negotiations were held with the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of India V.T.Singh; Director of the Bureau of Human Rights of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China L. Guanzhin; Executive Director of the Independent Standing Commission on Human Rights of the OIC M. Bout. During these meetings, issues related to the holding of seminar on youth rights in Tashkent was discussed.

The Uzbek delegation also met with the permanent representatives of Russia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Armenia at the UN Office and other international organizations.
