Uzbekistan Considering Hosting International Races Under FIA Auspices
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 9 December, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev received a delegation of the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA), led by its president Mohammed Ben Sulayem, who arrived in Tashkent to attend the organization’s General Assembly.
The delegation also included Carmelo Sanz de Barros, President of the FIA Senate, and Tim Shearman, FIA Vice President for Automobile Mobility and Tourism.
The parties discussed expanding cooperation with the global organization that regulates motorsport and promotes road safety standards. Mohammed Ben Sulayem praised the reforms underway in Uzbekistan aimed at developing professional and mass sports, increasing physical activity among the population, and creating conditions for the younger generation.
The talks focused on developing all areas of motorsport — from karting to formula series. Special attention was given to training Uzbek drivers, engineers, designers, and mechanics through the opportunities offered by the FIA University, as well as to creating modern infrastructure for motorsport competitions in the country.
The sides also discussed the prospects of holding international competitions in Uzbekistan under the FIA’s auspices, including a potential Formula 1 stage.
Following the meeting, President Mirziyoyev awarded Mohammed Ben Sulayem the Dustlik (Friendship) Order for his personal contribution to advancing cooperation and promoting motorsport in Uzbekistan.
Uzbekistan has been an FIA member since 2019. In 2024, Samarkand hosted the federation’s extraordinary anniversary General Assembly. As part of the current event, an awards ceremony for top athletes and teams will take place on 12 December at the Humo Arena complex.
