Uzbekistan Builds 500 kV Power Line to Boost Electricity Exports to Afghanistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Energy cooperation between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan continues to develop steadily, Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov said at a press conference on 28 October.

“Cooperation with Afghanistan is progressing actively. Over the past two months, I have visited the country three times. The situation remains stable, and the Afghan side is fully meeting its payment obligations for electricity,” the minister noted.

Uzbekistan has launched the construction of a new 500 kV power transmission line, Puli-Khumri, which will significantly increase electricity exports to Afghanistan.

Under the President’s directive, the project is expected to be completed within 18 months — by 1 April 2027.

“Once implemented, this project will multiply Uzbekistan’s electricity exports to Afghanistan,” Mirzamakhmudov emphasized.

The initiative is part of previously signed agreements worth $250 million, covering the construction and modernization of power lines and substations, as well as the expansion of capacity in key regions of Afghanistan.

Uzbekistan has been supplying electricity to Afghanistan since 2002. Currently, Afghanistan imports around 80 percent of its electricity from neighboring countries.
