Uzbekistan Approves Guidelines for Integrating Climate Education into Schools

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A training and practical seminar was held in Tashkent where final recommendations were developed and approved for incorporating climate-related topics into the curricula for grades 7–11 in biology, geography, physics, chemistry, and mathematics.

The seminar was organized by UNDP in Uzbekistan in cooperation with the Ministry of Preschool and School Education, the “Education Above All” Foundation, the international “Zamin” Foundation, and the Republican Education Center as part of the project “Empowering Youth and Developing Leadership through Climate Education in Uzbekistan.”

Experts analyzed the competencies that students should develop, using the interdisciplinary approach recommended by UNESCO.

As a result, a list of climate topics for inclusion in school curricula was approved, along with the competencies students should acquire in each subject and grade. A roadmap was also adopted, specifying timelines for curriculum updates, development of teaching materials, and teacher training.

Over 50,000 teachers and 2,520 mentors will receive training to equip more than 1.3 million students in grades 7–11 with climate knowledge and sustainable development skills.

The initiative supports Uzbekistan’s commitments under the Paris Agreement on climate change and the 2019–2030 Green Economy Transition Strategy.
