Uzbekistan and UNDP Discuss Prospects for Cooperation in Data Management and Digitalization
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On the sidelines of the UN Public Administration Forum taking place in Samarkand from 23 to 25 June 2025, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Digital Technologies Sherzod Shermatov met with Akiko Fuji, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Uzbekistan.
During the meeting, the two sides held in-depth discussions on digital transformation, data management, and the development of the artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem in the country. Particular attention was given to the advancement of digital government.
It was noted that, whereas government bodies previously handled data in an uncoordinated manner, information is now being systematically exchanged between the public and private sectors via a centralized platform. This structured approach improves data quality and reduces the risk of data breaches.
The conversation also emphasized that one of the key priorities in a country with a young and dynamic population is ensuring youth employment.
UNDP representatives informed that new analytical efforts are underway to create a high-quality data foundation tailored to the needs of artificial intelligence. In parallel, initiatives are being developed to strengthen the capacity of civil servants in data governance and AI technologies.
The meeting also touched on the role of the state in supporting startups, promoting innovation, and fostering an environment conducive to technological growth. The parties reviewed the need to expand cooperation between the public and private sectors to improve information systems and to train a skilled workforce, especially in light of ongoing reforms in the education system.
Akiko Fuji reaffirmed that the United Nations Development Programme remains committed to supporting Uzbekistan’s digital transformation process and expressed readiness to further strengthen the partnership.
