Uzbekistan and the United States Sign Memorandum on Nuclear Energy Cooperation

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan’s Deputy Foreign Minister Muzaffarbek Madrakhimov and U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Brent Christensen have signed a memorandum of understanding on nuclear cooperation.

Christensen stressed that Washington values Tashkent’s partnership in counterterrorism and in addressing other shared security challenges.

The State Department representative noted that economic ties between the two countries rest on a solid foundation and show growing investment potential in nuclear energy, critical minerals, and other key sectors.

According to him, the signing of the memorandum establishes a basis for expanded cooperation in nuclear energy, including exchanges of expertise between specialists and industrial enterprises in both countries.

Christensen also emphasized that the agreement is in line with a U.S. presidential executive order aimed at supporting the competitiveness of the American nuclear industry in the global market.

Earlier this summer, Uzbekistan’s Senate approved the country’s accession to the Vienna Convention on Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage, which will provide legal mechanisms for insurance and compensation in the construction of the republic’s first nuclear power plant.
