Uzbekistan and the UN to Expand Comprehensive Partnership
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 23 September, on the sidelines of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev met with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres.
The discussions focused on expanding cooperation with the UN in the context of Uzbekistan’s national priorities and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
At the outset, the President of Uzbekistan congratulated the Secretary-General on the anniversary session of the UN and reaffirmed strong support for his initiatives to reform the Organization in line with current global challenges.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the unprecedentedly high level of partnership between Uzbekistan and the UN. More than 160 programs and projects are currently being implemented, and a new five-year Cooperation Program is scheduled to be signed in October.
In recent years, 13 General Assembly resolutions have been adopted at Uzbekistan’s initiative, while the country has been elected a member of such respected bodies as ECOSOC, the Human Rights Committee, and the Statistical Commission.
Preparations for the upcoming high-level forum on combating childhood cancer and other severe diseases, to be held tomorrow at UN Headquarters, as well as for the 43rd UNESCO General Conference in Samarkand, were also discussed.
António Guterres highly praised the President of Uzbekistan’s address at the anniversary session, noting the importance of the country’s initiatives in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, shaping the concept of a New Central Asia, advancing global cooperation in digital technologies and artificial intelligence, engaging youth, promoting enlightened Islam, and other priority areas.
The meeting also included an exchange of views on pressing international and regional issues.
Following the talks, the parties agreed to further develop comprehensive partnership and to design new programs and projects for cooperation.
