Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 26 March 2026, at the Kuksaroy Presidential Residence, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev and President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon held bilateral talks and convened the first session of the Supreme Intergovernmental Council.
President Mirziyoyev emphasized the significance of the visit, noting that the launch of the Supreme Council will elevate bilateral cooperation to a qualitatively new level, fostering strategic partnership and practical initiatives.
The leaders welcomed active interactions at governmental, parliamentary, and agency levels, as well as preparations for the visit through the Intergovernmental Commission, exhibitions, forums, and the organization of Tajik Culture and Cinema Days in Uzbekistan.
During the session, the heads of state discussed new avenues of collaboration, analyzed potential areas of cooperation, and adopted a series of decisions to strengthen mutually beneficial relations. Key focus areas included boosting bilateral trade, developing industrial cooperation, improving transport connectivity, and enhancing water and energy security.
In 2025, trade turnover between the two countries reached nearly US$1 billion, primarily through the exchange of finished goods. Plans aim to raise bilateral trade to US$2 billion by 2030, including through the creation of the cross-border trade center “Oybek – Fotehobod,” the implementation of digital certification systems, and modernization of border crossing points.
The parties approved an industrial cooperation program covering projects in mining, energy, agriculture, electrical engineering, light industry, construction, and other sectors. Special attention was given to expanding the capital base of the joint Investment Company to support promising projects.
The leaders also discussed cooperation prospects in energy, water management, transportation, humanitarian and educational spheres. A five-year plan was agreed to strengthen cultural and humanitarian ties and enhance interregional interaction.
Both presidents exchanged views on regional and international issues, underscoring the importance of dialogue and cooperation within multilateral formats in Central Asia.
