Uzbekistan and Russia agreed on a site for nuclear power plants - Lavrov

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Uzbekistan and Russia agreed on a site for nuclear power plants. This was stated by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Tashkent.

According to him, this was an important phase in the work, and in the near future regular consultations will take place through the management of Rosatom with colleagues from the relevant structure of Uzbekistan.

He noted that this project is the first of its kind in Central Asia. “President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev pays special attention to him, as well as personally controls all other major undertakings, such as projects of Gazprom, Lukoil, Power Machines, RusHydro, Inter RAO, Zarubezhneft and other Russian companies that, together with their Uzbek partners, are actively implementing agreements, as they say, “on the ground” in metal and in other tangible forms,” said Sergey Lavrov.

The construction project of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan involves the construction of 2 power units with VVER-1200 reactors. The power units belong to the “3+” generation and fully comply with modern IAEA safety requirements, including significantly increased reliability of modern technologies.

On 29 December 2017, the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan signed an Agreement on the peaceful uses of atomic energy.

On 19 July 2018, the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev on the establishment of the Agency for the Development of Atomic Energy under the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan (Agency "Uzatom") was issued.

On 7 September 2018, Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Abdulla Aripov signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation in the construction of a nuclear power plant in Uzbekistan on the Russian project. The project involves the construction of 2 power units with VVER-1200 type reactors.

In line with the Decree of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan dated 13 October 2018 No. PP-3969, the signed agreement entered into force.

The first NPP power unit in the Republic of Uzbekistan is scheduled for commissioning by the end of 2028.
