Uzbekistan and Pakistan Agree on Joint Breeding of High-Yield Wheat
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — During a working visit to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, Uzbekistan’s Minister of Agriculture Ibrokhim Abdurakhmonov held a series of meetings with representatives of relevant ministries and leading scientific organizations.
In Islamabad, he met with Dr. Zulfikar Ali, Vice President of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad. During a constructive and friendly dialogue, the parties discussed the joint implementation of a project to cultivate hybrid wheat varieties with a potential yield exceeding 10 tons per hectare. Plans were made for collaborative research, the establishment of experimental fields, and practical application of the results.
Additionally, the minister met with Dr. Zahid Mahmud, head of the Speed Breeding program at the National Institute of Genomics and Advanced Biotechnology. The parties agreed to introduce accelerated wheat breeding methods to significantly reduce the time required to develop new varieties, as well as to apply advanced biotechnological approaches in Uzbekistan.
Following the visit, a decision was made to expedite the joint project, deepen scientific and practical collaboration, and promptly implement the planned initiatives.
