Uzbekistan and Latvia Discuss Expanding Cooperation in the Transport Sector

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan’s Minister of Transport, Ilkhom Makhkamov, held a meeting with a delegation led by Latvia’s Minister of Transport, Atis Shvinka, who is visiting the country on an official trip. The talks involved heads of Latvian Railways and the ports of Riga, Liepaja, and Ventspils.

The parties discussed prospects for expanding cooperation in rail and road transport, air connectivity, and port logistics. They noted positive developments in strategic collaboration between Uzbekistan and Latvia in the transport sector.

Atis Shvinka emphasized that this is his first visit to Uzbekistan since assuming office and expressed his intention to determine further steps to strengthen the partnership between the two countries.

The Latvian side expressed interest in increasing the number of flights, expanding cargo transportation volumes, and developing e-commerce.

The Uzbek side, in turn, raised issues regarding the transition to digital transport documents, increasing quotas for road freight, and implementing a permit-free system for transit transport.

Minister Ilkhom Makhkamov also briefed the delegation on Uzbekistan’s initiatives to develop international transport corridors along the East–West and South directions and proposed that Latvian partners actively collaborate to enhance the efficiency and throughput of these corridors.
