Uzbekistan and BCI Strengthen Cooperation in Sustainable Cotton Production

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Deputy Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Uzbekistan Alisher Shukurov held a working meeting with Jannis Bellinghausen, Senior Director for Standards, Systems and Integrity at the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI). The discussion marked an important stage in Uzbekistan’s international cooperation aimed at modernizing the cotton sector and introducing sustainable practices.

During the talks, the parties discussed strengthening sustainability principles in cotton growing, the practical implementation of BCI standards, and improving certification processes. Jannis Bellinghausen provided detailed insights into BCI’s global activities, the results of monitoring the sector’s development in Uzbekistan, and the progress achieved in recent years.

He highlighted significant improvements in social responsibility, working conditions, water resource efficiency and the modernization of agronomic practices.

Alisher Shukurov emphasized the importance of cooperation with BCI in implementing the country’s agricultural strategy. He proposed further alignment of the cotton sector with international standards, expanding educational programs for farmers and clusters, and simplifying and improving the efficiency of certification procedures.

The intention to promote sustainability across the entire value chain — from cotton production to processing — was also underscored.

The parties outlined concrete steps for launching joint projects, expanding certification activities, increasing the number of training programs for local specialists and facilitating the exchange of international expertise.

Following the meeting, an agreement was reached on the phased implementation of BCI standards in Uzbekistan.

BCI confirmed its readiness to provide technical assistance, expert support and help integrate international best practices into the country’s agricultural system.
