Uzbekistan Accelerates Energy Projects with Sumitomo and ACWA Power

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Deputy Prime Minister of Uzbekistan Jamshid Khodjaev held a meeting with Hajime Mori, Managing Executive Officer of Sumitomo Corporation, and Abid Malik, ACWA Power’s President for Central Asia.

During the negotiations, the parties reviewed the progress of joint projects in the field of renewable energy. It was noted that in August 2024, ACWA Power (51% share) and Sumitomo Corporation (49% share) signed an agreement for the joint development of projects with a total capacity of 3.5 GW, involving a total investment of US$4.2 billion.

Additionally, it was reported that in October 2025, with the participation of Shikoku Electric Power and Chubu Electric Power, an agreement was concluded to purchase shares in energy projects being implemented in the Samarkand region. Currently, the construction of two solar power plants equipped with energy storage systems is underway in the region. Meanwhile, in Karakalpakstan, there are plans to implement three wind power projects also featuring energy storage systems.

Particular attention during the meeting was focused on accelerating the finalization of agreements for the projects in Karakalpakstan, as well as ensuring effective inter-departmental coordination and the swift resolution of practical tasks.

The parties also discussed prospects for creating a joint industrial park in Uzbekistan with the participation of Sumitomo Corporation. It was noted that this project, leveraging the company’s international expertise, could serve as a platform for attracting Japanese investors and expanding industrial cooperation.

Following the talks, all parties confirmed their readiness to further deepen the partnership, with Sumitomo Corporation and ACWA Power recognized as strategically important and reliable partners for Uzbekistan.
