Uzbek Senator Questions Tashkent Mayor on Tree Protection

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Orzigul Kozikhonova, Chair of the Senate Committee on Youth, Women, Culture, and Sports, submitted a formal inquiry to Tashkent Mayor Shavkat Umurzakov concerning the protection of trees and compliance with urban planning standards.

The request highlights ongoing nationwide efforts to green urban areas, preserve trees and shrubs, expand green zones, and enforce moratoriums on tree cutting. Uzbek legislation imposes strict penalties for illegal damage or removal of trees, requiring offenders to plant and maintain new saplings.

Despite these measures, instances of tree cutting continue in some districts, causing public concern. Residents of the Chilanzar District, particularly near House No. 33 of the “Botirma” Mahalla, reported that fencing around the area in preparation for construction threatens long-standing trees.

The senator’s inquiry seeks detailed information on the current status of the site, reasons for fencing, planned construction activities, and their compliance with urban regulations. It also asks whether a tree inventory has been conducted and what steps are being taken to prevent tree removal and ensure the preservation of green spaces.
