Uzbek President Reviews Reconstruction of Mahdum Azam Complex

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited the town of Dakhbed in the Akdarya District of Samarkand Region on 25 November 2025, to inspect the ongoing reconstruction of the Mahdum Azam complex, officials reported.

The redevelopment project was first presented to the president during his March 2025 visit to Samarkand Region.

Mahdum Azam, originally from the modern Kasansay District, was a prominent Sufi scholar and a leading teacher in the Naqshbandi tariqat. He received his early education in a madrasa in Fergana before continuing his studies in Samarkand under Maulana Muhammad Qazi, a disciple of Khoja Akhrar Wali. Over his lifetime, he authored more than 30 works on tariqat studies and trained numerous students, earning him the honorific title Mahdum Azam.

The historic complex includes a mausoleum built by the ruler of Samarkand, Yalangtush Bahadir, as well as a mosque and a madrasa for students. The site houses over 50 tombs, including those of two Afghan rulers: Shah Hidayat ibn Shah Qasim (1668) and Shah Saodat ibn Shah Hidayat.

Reconstruction works involve extensive upgrades to the grounds and buildings. A modern three-story parking facility, entrance gates, dining hall, administrative offices, ablution areas, and a mosque with a capacity of 1,000 worshippers are being built. Additional structures include iwans and commercial and service facilities for pilgrims.

Once completed, the complex will be able to accommodate up to 35,000 visitors simultaneously, compared with the previous capacity of around 5,000.

During the visit, President Mirziyoyev participated in prayer, heard Quranic verses, and planted a tree on the site. He also issued instructions for further landscaping, planting of long-lived trees, and improving visitor facilities.
