Uzbek President Reviews Construction Progress on New Samarkand–Urgut Railway Line
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev inspected the construction of the new Samarkand–Urgut railway line on Tuesday to assess progress and issue additional instructions on transport infrastructure development.
Construction began in February 2025. The new 55-kilometer line includes two passenger stations and two freight stations inside the Urgut Free Economic Zone, as well as several bridges. Full electrification is planned at a later stage.
Once operational, the line will accommodate two pairs of intercity passenger trains and nine pairs of freight trains. By the end of the year — when completion is scheduled — the railway is expected to serve up to 359,000 passengers and carry 8.2 million tonnes of cargo annually, officials said.
Authorities say the project is significant for residents of Samarkand city and the Jambay, Pastdargom, Taylak and Urgut districts, offering safer and more modern transport links. It is also expected to boost domestic tourism and strengthen the Urgut FEZ, creating around 130 new jobs.
Mirziyoyev traveled to Urgut on a test run with local community representatives. During the trip, he instructed officials to improve surrounding areas, enhance passenger comfort, electrify the line and introduce modern digital systems. Special attention was given to station infrastructure and services for tourists.
Officials said the railway will help eliminate logistical bottlenecks, speed up freight movement, lower transportation costs and create a more attractive environment for investors, improving the region’s economic competitiveness.
During a meeting with Urgut district representatives, the president discussed regional development, living standards and the importance of maintaining stability.
Mirziyoyev also reviewed additional investment proposals for the area around the station. Local entrepreneurs plan to build a bus terminal, national teahouse, eco-market, housing, private schools and kindergartens. These projects are expected to create about 350 permanent jobs, contributing further to regional growth.
