Uzbek President Launches Major Projects in Samarkand Region
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — During his visit to the Samarkand region, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev attended a ceremony marking the launch of ongoing and newly initiated major projects in the area.
The event featured an exhibition showcasing products from the food, light, chemical, pharmaceutical, construction, metalworking, and furniture industries. The President reviewed modern production facilities, advanced equipment, technologies, and industrial output from the region.
Samarkand has steadily developed as a strategically important economic hub. In recent years, industrial output has consistently grown, and a favorable business and investment climate has laid a solid foundation for attracting domestic and foreign investment. The increasing number of enterprises with foreign participation reflects this positive trend.
Officials reported that 106 new projects, valued at nearly US$7 billion, are ready to launch or begin construction across cities and districts, with project managers participating via video link. These initiatives span multiple sectors, including mining and geology, building materials, automotive and electrical industries, chemical production, agriculture, as well as education, healthcare, services, and tourism.
President Mirziyoyev engaged with project implementers and representatives of local and international companies, reviewing proposals and initiatives. He emphasized that the projects will strengthen the region’s industrial potential, modernize production sectors, and ensure sustainable economic growth.
By pressing a symbolic button, the President officially launched the projects. Of these, 53 projects worth US$2.4 billion have started in partnership with Austria, China, the UAE, Turkey, India, and Russia. Construction has also begun on 53 projects valued at US$4.6 billion, involving the Netherlands, Japan, South Korea, China, the UAE, Turkey, Russia, and Iran.
The initiatives are expected to create 18,000 new jobs, generate industrial output worth 13 trillion soums, and develop export potential of US$700 million. They will contribute to industrial diversification, expansion of modern production chains, and broadening the region’s export reach.
The President was also briefed on water resource management improvements in the Narpay district, including the transfer of eight pump stations to the private sector under public-private partnerships. Modernization of 21 pumping units, at a cost of 12.3 billion soums, reduced annual electricity consumption from 68.1 million to 34.1 million kilowatt-hours.
Scientific approaches are being applied across Samarkand’s water sector, with a scientific advisor assigned to the regional governor to strengthen collaboration between research and practice. Dual education programs are being organized, allowing 72 students to complete six-month internships in water management, agricultural mechanization, hydrotechnics, hydroenergy, cadastral studies, and ecology.
At the conclusion of the visit, the President instructed officials to continue implementing these initiatives in a systematic and phased manner, ensuring long-term regional development and modernization.
