Uzbek Aviation Sector Generates Nearly US$800 Million Annually – IATA

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The aviation industry in Uzbekistan contributes nearly US$800 million annually to the national economy, according to the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

The Value of Air Transport Study for Uzbekistan shows the sector accounts for 0.9% of the country’s GDP and supports more than 128,300 jobs. Direct employment in aviation totals 12,400, generating US$96.5 million in added value, or 0.1% of GDP. The broader economic impact, which includes supply chain activity, employee spending, and tourism, raises the total contribution to US$795.5 million.

Aviation is a critical driver for the tourism sector, which contributes US$282.9 million to GDP. Foreign tourists spend roughly US$2 billion annually on local goods and services, further boosting the economy.

Rafael Schwartzman, IATA’s Regional Vice President for Europe, highlighted that Uzbekistan’s strategic investments in airport modernization, fleet upgrades, and safety standards have been crucial in developing a resilient aviation industry. He said these efforts strengthen the rapidly growing tourism sector and position the country as a key future transit hub between East and West for both passenger and cargo transport.

Uzbekistan is also expanding its air cargo operations. In 2023, 66,600 tons of air freight passed through the country’s airports. Volumes are expected to increase following the opening of a specialized cargo terminal in Tashkent and the ongoing development of a cargo airport in Navoi.

To further develop the sector and enhance Uzbekistan’s appeal as a regional hub, IATA recommends focusing on four priorities:

Global standards: Aligning local aviation operations with international safety and service standards to strengthen Uzbekistan’s position as a hub between Europe and Asia.

Infrastructure: Building new airports in Tashkent, Bukhara, and Urgench to meet growing passenger and cargo demands.

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and energy transition: Ensuring local SAF production via Gas-to-Liquids technology meets international standards, using renewable or low-carbon gases for environmental compliance and global recognition.

Human capital: Developing and retaining skilled personnel capable of ensuring safe and efficient aviation operations as the sector expands.
