Uzatom Sets Date for Public Hearings on Nuclear Power Plant Project in Jizzakh Region
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Uzbekistan Agency for Atomic Energy (“Uzatom”) announced that it will hold public hearings on 23 December regarding the planned construction of a nuclear power plant.
The event is scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. Tashkent time and will take place at Cultural Center No. 30 in the village of Bogdon, Farish District, Jizzakh Region—near the proposed construction site.
According to the agency, the hearings will present materials on the environmental impact assessment, covering both the construction phase and the plant’s subsequent operation.
Representatives of all interested parties are invited to participate, and suggestions can be submitted via Uzatom’s official email addresses.
The project involves the installation of Russian-designed VVER-1000 and RITM-200N reactors, with a combined capacity of 2,110 MW.
It is estimated that the plant will generate 16–17 billion kWh of electricity annually, covering 12–15% of the country’s consumption.
The general contractor is Atomstroyexport, the international engineering division of the Russian state corporation Rosatom.
During the construction phase, up to 13,000 jobs are expected to be created, with an additional 2,000 jobs once the plant is operational.
The nuclear power plant is designed for a service life of 60 years.
