Use of Uzbek Language in Afghanistan Not Restricted — MFA Comment
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Uzbekistan has denied reports alleging restrictions on the use of the Uzbek language in Afghanistan.
The Ministry emphasized that the international status of the Uzbek language, its widespread use, and promotion on the global stage remain key priorities of Uzbekistan’s foreign policy.
Reports of alleged restrictions circulating in the media and social networks caused public concern. In response, authorized representatives of the Uzbek MFA promptly contacted Afghan counterparts to clarify the situation.
Afghan officials categorically stated that such reports are inaccurate: no restrictions on the use of the Uzbek language have been implemented in the country, and the Afghan government and people continue to show respect for the fraternal Uzbek nation and its language.
An official representative of the Afghan MFA clarified that, as part of standardizing signage at state and educational institutions, a three-language system is applied: Pashto, Dari, and English. For northern regions, including Samangan University, an exception is made, with signage in Pashto, Dari, and Uzbek.
Additionally, as a symbol of good-neighborly relations and mutual trust, the Afghan government plans to open, for the first time, a Master’s program in Uzbek Language and Literature at Jowzjan State University. The academic year is expected to commence at the beginning of this year.
