Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On Friday, 28 November 2014, Ambassador of the United States to Uzbekistan George A. Krol, First Deputy Minister of Health Mr. Asilbek Khudoyarov, and the World Health Organization (WHO) Representative in Uzbekistan Dr. Asmus Hammerich, participated in the close out conference of the US Agency for International Development (USAID) TB CARE I Project.

USAID and WHO are celebrating the completion of four years of successful collaboration with the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The close out ceremony was held at Dedeman Hotel in Tashkent and attended by officials from the Uzbek Ministries of Health and Foreign Affairs as well as other health officials.

The USAID TB CARE I project has been one of the key parts of US Government assistance in improving the tuberculosis service in Uzbekistan. The project covered a wide range of technical areas, including universal access to quality TB diagnostics, laboratory, infection control, programmatic management of drug-resistant tuberculosis, strengthening of healthcare system, monitoring and evaluation and operational research.

Since 2011, the Government of Uzbekistan embarked on a large-scale TB hospital construction program. USAID and WHO supported MOH to reduce hospital-based transmissions of tuberculosis and provided diagnostic and infection control equipment valued at $413,943. USAID and WHO trained hospital staff, administrators, and physicians on effective means of infection control in 11 regional TB hospitals serving a population of 15 million people.

USAID supports the Government of Uzbekistan’s efforts to reduce the burden of tuberculosis. The Government of Uzbekistan’s and USAID’s cooperation has improved tuberculosis control, helped to reduce morbidity and mortality, and contributed to a decrease in tuberculosis cases and deaths compared to a decade ago.

Since 1993, USAID has provided more than US$356 million in assistance to Uzbekistan.
