UN Tourism Opens Silk Road Office in Samarkand
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 5 April 2026, Samarkand inaugurated the UN Tourism thematic office, “Silk Road Tourism,” alongside a certificate ceremony for graduates of the International Academy of Tourism.
The new office aims to serve as an international platform for promoting sustainable tourism, coordinating joint projects, and developing cross-border tourist routes across the Silk Road region.
UN Tourism Secretary-General Shaikha Al-Nuwais highlighted the symbolic significance of locating the office in Samarkand, emphasizing the city’s historical role as a crossroads of cultures, ideas, and trade. She praised Uzbekistan’s proposal and confirmed full organizational support for the office’s activities.
During her visit, Shaikha Al-Nuwais also appreciated the historic nature of the building and its artistic interior collection. She participated in the certificate ceremony for graduates of the International Academy of Tourism, underlining the importance of education as a foundation for professional and personal growth, and noted President Shavkat Mirziyoyev’s special support for youth initiatives.
The office opening and educational event reinforce Samarkand’s role as a hub of knowledge, culture, and sustainable tourism along the Silk Road.
