UN General Assembly Adopts Resolution in Support of Peace in Ukraine; Uzbekistan Abstains
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The UN General Assembly has adopted a draft resolution in support of the independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
107 countries voted in favor of the document. Twelve nations voted against it, including Russia and Belarus, while 51 states abstained, among them Armenia, Brazil, Hungary, Kazakhstan, Serbia, the United States, and Uzbekistan.
The United States had proposed removing two paragraphs from the draft resolution concerning sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as provisions of the UN Charter. However, member states declined to put the proposal to a vote, and the resolution was adopted in its original form.
The document was approved on the fourth anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine.
It calls for an immediate, complete, and unconditional ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, as well as the establishment of a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace in accordance with international law, including the UN Charter.
The resolution also provides for the full exchange of prisoners of war, the release of all unlawfully detained persons, and the return of all interned, forcibly displaced, or deported civilians, including children, as an important confidence-building measure between the parties.
