Two Men Detained in Bukhara for Attempting to Sell Mercury Worth $35,000

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Two men were detained in Bukhara while attempting to sell mercury valued at US$35,000.

The operation was conducted by the Bukhara Regional Office of the State Security Service in cooperation with the Department for Combating Economic Crimes and the territorial units of the National Guard.

The detainees were identified as a Bukhara resident born in 1998 and a resident of Bukhara District born in 1984.

The men were caught in the act selling 343 grams of mercury, prohibited in the country, distributed across three vials. A criminal case has been initiated under Article 185-1, Part 2, Clauses “b” and “c” of the Criminal Code, and investigative measures are ongoing.

Citizens are reminded that the free sale, purchase, storage, or use of mercury and its compounds in household settings is prohibited. This chemical element is highly toxic and banned from circulation within the country.
