Tolls on New Highways Will Cost Less Than Speeding Fines, Officials Say
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The government of Uzbekistan will introduce tariffs for travel on new toll roads, officials have confirmed.
Hasan Umarov, chief legal adviser of the Committee for Automobile Roads under the Ministry of Transport, shared details in an interview with the YouTube channel of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis.
According to the draft law, the Cabinet of Ministers will approve the pricing methodology, while the Ministry of Transport will set maximum tariff rates. Investors will have the right to determine toll fees within these limits. The methodology provides for differentiated rates — both for full routes and for each kilometer traveled.
Umarov noted that using toll roads will be cheaper and more convenient than driving on regular highways equipped with numerous speed cameras.
For example, a 200-kilometer trip on a toll road would cost around 100,000 soums, whereas a single speeding fine on regular roads can reach up to 200,000 soums. The introduction of toll roads is also expected to reduce congestion on public highways.
On 23 September, the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis passed, in its main and final readings, a new version of the Law “On Automobile Roads,” which establishes the legal framework for a network of toll highways in Uzbekistan.
