Tokayev and Mirziyoyev tour historic sites of Bukhara
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Kazakhstan’s President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Uzbekistan’s President Shavkat Mirziyoyev visited some of Bukhara’s most renowned historical landmarks, including the Ark Fortress, the Poi-Kalyan complex, and the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble.
During the visit, detailed information was presented on the history of these sites, their architectural features, and their role in the development of science, culture, and urban planning in the East.
The tour began at the Ark Fortress, an ancient citadel that for centuries served as the political and administrative center of Bukhara. Historical and archaeological research indicates that the fortress evolved over a long period and later functioned as the residence of Bukhara’s rulers. Today, it remains one of the city’s key symbols and forms part of Bukhara’s historic center, which is included on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The leaders then visited the Poi-Kalyan complex, one of the largest architectural ensembles in Central Asia. Its centerpiece is the Kalyan Minaret, built in 1127, which has long served not only as an architectural landmark but also as a symbolic feature of the city.
The complex also includes the Kalyan Mosque, dating back to the early 16th century, and the Mir-i-Arab Madrasa. The ensemble is regarded as one of the most significant examples of architecture from the Shaybanid period.
Particular attention was given to the Lyabi-Hauz ensemble, a historic public space formed around an ancient reservoir. It includes the Kukeldash Madrasa, as well as the khanqah and madrasa of Nadir Divan-Begi. For centuries, the site has served as a focal point of public life, attracting residents, travelers, and scholars.
During the visit, the leaders were also shown examples of traditional crafts, decorative arts, and architectural ornamentation.
Bukhara’s centuries-old role as a major center of Islamic civilization, science, education, and trade along the Silk Road was highlighted.
It was also noted that Bukhara served as an important spiritual and educational center for the peoples of the region. Representatives of the Kazakh intelligentsia and enlightenment movement studied here, including Mashhur Zhusup Kopeev, Nurzhan Naushabayev, Shortanbay Kanayuly, and Sultanmakhmut Toraighyrov, among others who contributed to the development of Kazakh literature and social thought.
