Timur Ishmetov: Rumors About Purchasing Gold from Russia Are Unfounded
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Uzbekistan does not purchase or resell gold from Russia, said Timur Ishmetov, Chairman of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan.
Earlier, The Economist reported that Uzbekistan allegedly buys Russian gold and resells it, claiming that this practice allows Russia to circumvent sanctions.
Timur Ishmetov refuted these claims, emphasizing that the country has sufficient gold reserves and does not import this precious metal from abroad.
“We have never purchased gold from overseas, nor do we plan to do so. We have enough of our own gold,” he stressed.
According to Ishmetov, the regulator contacted The Economist editorial office to point out the inaccuracy of the information, after which the publication released a corrected version of the article.
