The U.S. imposes 10% tariff on imports from Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The U.S. authorities have introduced import tariffs on goods from Uzbekistan.
On 2 April 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump announced the imposition of new tariffs on imports from more than 150 countries, including Uzbekistan.
According to the established rules, a basic tariff rate of 10% applies to most countries. However, tariffs are significantly higher for certain countries: for China and Taiwan, they reach 32%, for the European Union they are 20%, and for India, 26%. In addition, a uniform 25% tariff has been introduced on the import of all vehicles.
A 10% tariff has been set for goods from Uzbekistan.
In his statement, Donald Trump characterized this move as a "Declaration of Economic Independence" and declared April 2 as "Liberation Day." According to him, these measures are aimed at eliminating unfair trade practices and protecting jobs in the United States.
Washington's decision has sparked negative reactions from the international community. Ursula von der Leyen, the President of the European Commission, condemned the new tariffs, calling them a serious threat to the global economy. She also announced that the European Union is preparing retaliatory measures.
Economic experts warn that the tariff increase could lead to higher prices for American consumers and slow down economic growth not only in the U.S. but also in other countries. Stock markets reacted to Trump's announcement with a sharp decline in stock prices.
For Uzbekistan, the introduction of a 10% tariff could negatively impact exports to the U.S., particularly in sectors such as textiles and agriculture. Companies that are focused on the American market will have to adapt to the new conditions or look for alternative sales channels.
By the end of 2024, trade turnover between Uzbekistan and the U.S. reached US$881.7 million, compared to US $765.1 million in 2023. Uzbekistan's exports to the United States grew to US$317.4 million in 2024, up from US$253.1 million the previous year. The import of American goods into Uzbekistan also increased, surpassing US$564.3 million compared to US$512 million in 2023.
