The UNCTAD report cites positive changes in the economy of Uzbekistan.

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 16 June 2020, the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) published a report on world investments under the heading “International production after a pandemic”.

According to the Permanent Mission of Uzbekistan to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, this report summarizes the positive changes in the economy of Uzbekistan.

The authors of the report note that in 2019 Foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows to Uzbekistan more than tripled (a 266% increase to US$2.3 billion). The volume of equity investments of companies along with reinvestments of income increased by 231% to US$2.1 billion.

UNCTAD believes that part of the volume of FDI inflows is associated with ongoing large-scale projects in the oil and gas sector. In addition, a number of important investment projects were launched with the participation of foreign companies in the chemical, textile, electricity and other fields.

The drafters of the report also highlighted the recent measures taken in Uzbekistan to attract FDI. In particular, the Presidential Council of Foreign Investors was established, a new legal framework for regulating public-private partnerships was created, a multi-level mechanism for resolving disputes between the investor and the state was introduced, and a single window mechanism was introduced to facilitate investment.

In general, it was emphasized that according to the results of 2020. FDI in the world will decline by 40% due to the pandemic, and in 2021 - another 5-10%. Moreover, their decrease this year by about 38% is projected for the CIS countries and southeastern Europe.
