The Conference dedicated to World Environment Day held

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- On 4 June 2019, a conference dedicated to this significant date to celebrate World Environment Day was held.

The event was organized by the State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Ecology and Environmental Protection, the United Nations Development Program in Uzbekistan and JV SovPlim LLC.

5 June  - World Environment Day is an event for everyone and for the whole world. The event was established by the UN General Assembly at the 27th session by resolution No. A / RES / 2994 (XXVII) of December 15, 1972. The selected date has a symbolic meaning. It is timed to the day of the start of the Stockholm Conference on the human environment.

The celebration of each World Environment Day is organized around a theme focused on the most pressing environmental issue. The theme of the celebrations of 2019 is devoted to the fight against air pollution and is held under the motto - “Fight to air pollution”.

No one is protected from this pollution, which is formed from five main man-made sources: industry, transport, waste, agriculture and households. These sources emit into the atmosphere a number of substances hazardous to human health, including carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen dioxide, nitrous oxide, near-surface ozone, particulate matter, sulfur dioxide, hydrocarbons, and lead.

According to the UN, annually about 7 million people die from breathing in polluted air, people develop chronic diseases such as asthma, and mental development is slowed down in children. According to the World Bank, countries’ losses from air pollution exceed US$5 trillion a year.

Not all pollution is due to human activity. Dust storms and other natural processes can also cause problems. Of particular concern are dust and sandstorms. Suspended particles and dust carried by dust storms can travel thousands of kilometers, carrying various pathogens and harmful substances, which can lead to acute and chronic forms of respiratory diseases.

Under these conditions, the task of each of us is to take the necessary measures aimed at introducing new sustainable methods of rational use of natural resources, creating the necessary conditions to ensure their preservation for future generations.

In recent years, under the leadership of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, a new system of public administration in the field of environmental protection has been formed, a number of key regulatory and legal acts have been adopted, and draft strategic and program documents have been updated.

In particular, in order to create an effective system for collecting, transporting, recycling, recycling and disposal of solid household waste, preventing their harmful effects on public health and the environment, the Strategy for the management of solid household waste in the Republic of Uzbekistan for the period 2019-2028 has been approved.

This strategy will contribute to improving the infrastructure of sanitation, reducing the negative impact of waste on the environment and will create conditions for ensuring a favorable ecological state of the environment, improving the level and quality of life of the population.

At the same time, at present, work has been carried out on the development of the draft National Concept for the Environmental Protection of the Republic of Uzbekistan for the period up to 2030. Analysis of the current state of the environment, global and regional environmental problems, new environmental threats have led to the need to develop the first in the history of the country of this kind of concept, which is an integral part of the socio-economic process of improving the quality of life of the population in the Republic of Uzbekistan.

It is expected that this Concept will be adopted in the near future and aimed at practical implementation.

The experience of developed countries shows that the school system is one of the best tools for solving certain national problems. Today, one of these tasks is environmental education aimed at ensuring the survival, sustainable development and safety of mankind. Environmental education implies its embodiment in behavior, lifestyle, value system, family education and the inner life in general.

In this context, the new Concept for the development of environmental education, approved by a government decree of 27 May, will contribute to the formation of the ecological knowledge, consciousness and culture of the younger generation, improvement of environmental science with the involvement of innovative technologies.

Separate attention is required to solve the problems associated with the consequences of the desiccation of the Aral Sea. At the initiative of the Government of the Republic, this year work was done on afforestation of the dried-up bottom of the Aral Sea on an area of over 500,000 hectares.

Nevertheless, the complex of problems associated with the degradation of ecosystems in the Aral Sea zone requires the adoption of considerable efforts and resources. One of such measures is the implementation of the project “Sustainable use of wetlands, lakes and floodplain ecosystems of the Aral Sea region” involving grants from the Global Environment Facility in the amount of US$4 million.

World Environment Day is a day that once again reminds us of our duty to future generations in ensuring the safety of our nature and its resources, which we borrowed from it.
