The British Council Strengthens Support for English Teacher Training Reforms in Uzbekistan
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The British Council in Uzbekistan continues to actively support national reforms in English language education, providing assistance to both prospective and in-service teachers across the country.
In close collaboration with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Innovation and the Ministry of Preschool and School Education of the Republic of Uzbekistan, the organization has organized a National Forum for universities preparing future teachers and launched a Continuous Professional Development Hub (CPD Hub) in Tashkent.
The British Council’s work aligns with the objectives set forth in Presidential Decree No. UP-73 of 28 April 2025, “On Measures to Further Improve the System of Teacher Training,” and Presidential Resolution No. PP-231 of 21 June 2024, “On Additional Measures to Improve the System of Continuous Professional Development for Employees of Preschool and School Education Institutions.”
On 6–7 January 2026, the National Forum brought together representatives from more than 50 public and private universities engaged in training future English teachers.
During the event, participants discussed key priorities and challenges in modernizing the PRESETT program, and took part in a series of training sessions on reflective practices, inclusion, and strengthening professional communities. Teachers received a set of methodological resources and tools to align curricula with assessment standards, which they can apply in their universities and share with colleagues.
On 8 January 2026, in partnership with the A. Avloni National Institute of Pedagogical Mastery, the CPD Hub was officially launched — a national platform supporting continuous professional development and educational reforms.
The Hub provides a modern and accessible space for both in-person and online learning and aims to enhance teacher qualifications as part of the ongoing educational reforms.
“Uzbekistan is undertaking large-scale educational reforms, and teacher preparation remains a top priority. We work closely with the ministries of education, supporting the national reform and bringing together over 220 teacher trainers from across the country to discuss curriculum modernization, the integration of reflective practices, and inclusive education,” said Jamila Gulyamova, Deputy Director of the British Council in Uzbekistan.
She emphasized the special focus on the role of artificial intelligence in English language teaching, the development of new core competencies for future teachers, and strengthening the PRESETT specialist network. To provide prompt support to secondary school teachers, the CPD Hub is beginning operations in Tashkent, Fergana, Jizzakh, and Namangan in cooperation with the A. Avloni Institute.
The forum is financially supported by the UK government under its international development program and is part of the Accelerating English Language Learning in Central Asia (AELLCA) initiative.
The program aims to support national English language reforms, improve teacher training, and create a more inclusive educational environment across Central Asia. The main academic partner of AELLCA is the Norwich Institute for Language Education (United Kingdom).
