Tashkent to Revise Road Barrier Specifications to Improve Pedestrian Safety

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The city of Tashkent plans to adjust the specifications for road barriers on urban thoroughfares, according to the city administration.

The installation of pedestrian guide barriers on certain street sections began in 2025 under the initiative of the Main Department of Road Traffic Safety.

The measures aim to reduce pedestrian-involved accidents and better organize street crossings. The project is being overseen by the city’s Main Department of Capital Construction.

This year, a new Center for Traffic Management (CTM) began operations in Tashkent, tasked with implementing a systematic approach to traffic control and coordinating relevant municipal services.

“The establishment of the CTM marks a shift toward a unified city standard: decisions regarding barriers, road markings, traffic signals, and traffic flow schemes are now based on data, engineering calculations, and mandatory coordination with all relevant departments,” the hokimiyat noted.

The CTM is conducting additional engineering and traffic assessments of barrier installation sites, taking into account traffic intensity, accident statistics, and flow modeling. The list of high-risk locations is being updated, priority points clarified, and a unified citywide traffic management strategy is being developed.

Current evaluations are assessing whether installed barriers meet modern safety standards. Barrier parameters at approaches to pedestrian crossings, as well as in turning and U-turn zones, will be lowered and adjusted to ensure proper visibility and orientation for road users in accordance with GOST 23457-86.

The hokimiyat emphasized that these measures are part of a comprehensive modernization of the city’s street and road network, aimed at balancing safety, traffic capacity, and the quality of the urban environment.
