Tashkent Plans Two-Level Interchange Near Buyuk Ipak Yuli Metro

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A two-level road interchange is planned at the intersection of Mustakillik Avenue, Mirzo Ulugbek Street, and Buyuk Ipak Yuli Street, near the Buyuk Ipak Yuli Metro station, the Tashkent Center for Traffic Management (CTM) announced at a press conference.

According to Bakhrom Shakirov, head of Tashkent Invest, the project aims to improve convenience for residents and visitors, enhance pedestrian safety, and optimize traffic flow. The intersection is one of the busiest in the city, regularly experiencing congestion that requires manual regulation by traffic police.

The project is expected to reduce travel time along the 8 km section from the C1 district to the Small Ring Road (Temur Malik) by 25% during peak hours, from 45 to 32 minutes. Traffic capacity is projected to increase by 21%, from 98,800 to 120,000 vehicles per day, while average vehicle speed is expected to rise from 21 to 26 km/h.

Public transport will also benefit, with bus speeds projected to reach 23 km/h, improving schedule reliability. A dedicated BRT line will be built along Mirzo Ulugbek Street on the former tram route, connecting to the first BRT line planned along Shakhrisabz and Mustakillik streets.

The project includes comprehensive street reconstruction: upgraded sidewalks, bike lanes, landscaping, and installation of benches. Additional green space of about 8,000 square meters will be created to compensate for relocated trees. A tunnel with surface-level bus stops will be constructed at the intersection of Mirzo Ulugbek Street and Durmon Yuli.

Specialists from China Construction, together with local organizations, developed the project. Traffic flow modeling used artificial intelligence to determine the most efficient solution.

Officials said the main construction phase may take 50–60 days, funded by an investor previously involved in the reconstruction of Shota Rustaveli Street. The project cost is currently under review and expert assessment.

During public hearings with local community representatives, elders expressed support for the initiative, emphasizing its importance for the city’s infrastructure development.
