Tashkent Outlines Amir Timur Square Modernization Plans
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Tashkent city administration has reviewed public and expert proposals on modernizing Amir Timur Square, according to a statement from the capital’s authorities.
Officials noted that suggestions to build overpasses and expand pedestrian zones will be considered in future redevelopment projects. Current work at the site, however, is purely cosmetic.
The debate over the square’s future emerged following announcements of extensive work in the city center. Specialists have recommended using the opportunity to significantly enhance pedestrian infrastructure, including narrowing roadways and creating new public spaces.
City authorities reaffirmed their commitment to modern planning standards and confirmed that urbanist proposals will form the basis for subsequent modernization phases.
The current upgrades, due to conclude by 7 April, are timed for the 690th anniversary of Amir Timur. They include partial resurfacing of paths, irrigation system repairs, and replacement of engineering utilities. Major reconstruction incorporating the proposed urbanist changes will be presented to the public in a separate project phase.
During the current work, metro exits leading directly to the square are temporarily closed.
