Tashkent Hosts Record-Breaking Backgammon Grand Prix
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — From 23 to 29 March, the Uzbek capital is hosting the Asian Grand Prix international backgammon tournament, organized by the International Backgammon Federation.
The competition has already made history as the largest backgammon tournament in the world, featuring a record prize pool of US$500,000—more than seven times higher than that of the previous tournament held in Dubai.
The driving force behind the large-scale transformation of the sport is IBF President Umar Kremlev, who is implementing a strategy to elevate backgammon to a new global level. The tournament in Tashkent has become a key milestone in this effort, bringing together players from around the world.
“Backgammon is a game with a rich history, and today we are entering a new era of its development. Our goal is to make backgammon a truly global sport. We will continue to improve tournaments and expand the geography of participants. I thank Tashkent, the country’s leadership, and everyone supporting the development of backgammon. I wish all participants a fair and exciting game,” Kremlev said.
The tournament has attracted around 500 players from nearly 50 countries. The largest delegation comes from Russia, with 140 participants, including 36 national team players. Competitors from Argentina, China, Türkiye, United States, Italy and other nations are also taking part. The high standard of officiating is ensured by 24 international referees.
The tournament is being held at the modern AXELON center, where more than 180 gaming tables have been installed. The program includes 12 disciplines—a record number for events of this level. Live broadcasts and comprehensive media coverage have been arranged for spectators.
The opening ceremony was attended by Uzbekistan’s Deputy Minister of Sports Avazjon Karimov, Chairman of the Tourism Committee Abdulaziz Akkulov, and Vice President of the International Belt Wrestling Federation Ravshan Dastirov.
The tournament’s media partners include Rossotrudnichestvo in Uzbekistan and Moscow 24.
