Tashkent Develops City Design Code to Streamline Architecture and Urban Environment

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — A new document regulating the implementation and application of a city design code has been developed in Tashkent.

On 25 December, the document was reviewed by the standing commission of the city council of people’s deputies on construction, utilities, ecology, industry, and transport.

The annexes regulating the design code will be published on the platform Regulation.gov.uz for public discussion and feedback from residents and professional communities.

The Tashkent design code was developed jointly with the analytical center Citymakers International and Toshkent Invest Kompaniyasi. It is aimed at creating a coherent, convenient, and safe urban environment, establishing unified rules for the appearance of buildings and public spaces, and promoting a visually harmonious city culture.

The document covers the following areas:

Architecture of buildings, including materials, color schemes, façade treatments, shop windows, and entrances;

Signage and advertising, including size, fonts, lighting, and permissible placement;

Urban landscaping, including sidewalks, street lighting, benches, trash bins, and greenery;

Street elements, such as fences, wayfinding, public transport stops, and small architectural forms;

Historical environment, with measures to preserve the appearance of monuments and historic districts.

In addition to visual regulation, the document establishes rules for the rational use of adjacent territories and identifies tourist streets with special regimes that take into account their public significance.

The city administration noted that implementing the design code will create conditions for increased entrepreneurial activity, higher business and household incomes, and improved comfort and safety of the urban environment.
