Talgo Signs Largest High-Speed Train Maintenance Contract in Uzbekistan

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Spanish company Talgo, specializing in the design, manufacture, and maintenance of high-speed lightweight trainsets, has signed a ten-year contract with Uzbekistan’s state railway enterprise (UTY) valued at nearly €80 million, Talgo said in a statement.

The agreement covers comprehensive maintenance of the current fleet of six Talgo 250 high-speed trains operating in the country.

This is Talgo’s largest maintenance contract in Uzbekistan, marking over 15 years of Spanish technology presence in Central Asia. The Talgo 250 trains operate at a commercial speed of up to 230 km/h, with a design maximum speed of 275 km/h.

Talgo’s history in Uzbekistan began in 2009 with the acquisition of two Talgo 250 trains, which entered service in 2011. In the following years, the fleet was expanded: two additional eleven-car trainsets were introduced in 2017, and in 2021, two more trains along with four extra cars were added to modernize the initial sets.

The trains feature natural tilting technology, allowing higher speeds on curves through passive carbody inclination. For operation in Uzbekistan, the broad gauge of 1,520 mm, as in Russia, is retained.

The newly signed contract strengthens Talgo’s role as a strategic partner of UTY, ensures the reliability and availability of the fleet for the next ten years, solidifies its position in a key market, and supports technological advancement in the country’s high-speed rail sector.
