Students of academic lyceums to study two years
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a decree “On further improving the system of targeted training of candidates for admission to higher educational institutions”.

The document said that over 35,000 young men and girls graduate academic lyceums each year. Education in academic lyceums is aimed at forming a potential contingent of students of higher educational institutions.

Analysis of the current activity of academic lyceums, their locations, the indicators of their graduates entering to the higher educational institutions show that the activities in this sphere are unsatisfactory.

The document said that there is need to take measures to optimize number of academic lyceums and improve quality of education.

According to the document, academic lyceums will stop to accept students from 2018/2019 academic year. Some 37 academic lyceums, located a far from universities and with low quality of education, as well bad material and technical base will be closed from 1 September 2019.

About 68 academic lyceums with high scientific and pedagogical potential, their material and technical base will be transferred to the higher educational institutions, the document said.

From 2017/2018 academic year, the term of study in academic lyceums will be two years. New curricula and curricula of academic lyceums will also be reviewed and approved.

Students admitted to academic lyceums from remote regions will be provided in accordance with the established procedure with places in dormitories and meals on a preferential basis. The parents will pay a fee equal to one size of minimal salary.

The students of the 2nd and 3rd year of academic lyceums, which will not receive students from the academic year 2018/2019, will be given the opportunity to complete their studies in the specified academic lyceums in accordance with the established curriculum and will receive diplomas of graduates of academic lyceums of the state sample.

Buildings, structures and land plots of the liquidated academic lyceums will be transferred to the attached higher educational institutions, if there is no need, to the relevant district (city) hokimiyats on the right of operational management.

The higher educational institutions are given the right to purchase educational and laboratory equipment, consumables, computer equipment, textbooks and teaching aids of academic lyceums, and also provide material support to teachers and students of academic lyceums at the expense of extra-budgetary funds of higher educational institutions.
