Socio-economic development of Syrdarya region over five years

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Center for Economic Research and Reforms (CERR) presents the results of the development of Syrdarya region over the past five years. The experts presented the main changes in the socio-economic development of the region that have occurred during the last years of active reforms.

Syrdarya region is home to 2.5% of the population of Uzbekistan, and its area is about 1% of the country’s territory.

However, despite its small population and small size, this region with its geographic location and a number of features plays an important role in the country’s economy.

In the north, the region borders with Kazakhstan, and in the south with Tajikistan. Syrdarya is one of the three regions of the republic.

Gross domestic product of the region (GRP) for 2017-2020 increased by 8.4% and amounted to 12.9 trillion soums.

The number of operating enterprises in the region increased by 37% from 13.3 thousand in 2016 to 18.2 thousand in 2020.

In the field of infrastructure development for 2016-2020. 741 km of water supply networks were commissioned.

For five years, about 83 thousand jobs have been created in the region.

During the same period, 1 192 thousand sq. m. were put into operation in the region. housing, 5.4 thousand places were created in preschool institutions, 10.2 thousand places in schools, 1.4 thousand hospital beds.

For 2021, 737 projects have been formed in Syrdarya region. Their total cost is 25.5 trillion soums, of which about US$900 million are foreign investments.

The textile industry, construction materials production, pharmaceutical and food industries were identified as “drivers” in the formation of projects.
