Shavkat Mirziyoyev and Lee Jae Myung Discuss Strengthening Strategic Partnership Between Uzbekistan and South Korea
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — On 23 September, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev held a meeting with President of the Republic of Korea Lee Jae Myung.
During the talks, the leaders discussed further strengthening Uzbek-Korean relations as a strategic partnership and expanding multilateral cooperation.
Both sides expressed satisfaction with the high level of interaction achieved in recent years, noting increased exchanges and contacts at all levels. Mutual trade continues to grow steadily, and the volume of direct investments by Korean companies in Uzbekistan’s economy has exceeded US$8 billion.
Special attention was given to educational cooperation: Uzbekistan hosts branches of four leading Korean universities, and professional education centers operate successfully across the regions.
The long-standing cooperation with the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and the Export-Import Bank of Korea was highly appreciated, with a combined project portfolio amounting to US$3.5 billion.
An agreement was reached to prepare a new long-term program of technological and industrial partnership, aimed at advancing projects in critical raw material processing, chemical industry, mechanical engineering, agriculture, transport, aviation, biotechnology, and other priority sectors. In this context, the importance of the upcoming Intergovernmental Commission meeting was emphasized.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional cooperation, including the “Central Asia – Republic of Korea” format.
At the conclusion of the meeting, President Mirziyoyev invited Lee Jae Myung to pay a state visit to Uzbekistan to further strengthen bilateral cooperation.
