Severstal supplies rolled metal for the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power station - the most powerful in Central Asia

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- Cherepovets - PJSC Severstal, one of the world’s largest vertically integrated steel and mining companies, supplied over five thousand tons of rolled metal for the construction of the Rogun hydroelectric power station (HPP) in Tajikistan, on the Vakhsh river.

After the completion of the construction, the dam of the hydroelectric power station with a height of 335 meters will become the highest rock-fill dam in the world, and the installed capacity of 3,600 MW will allow the station to become the largest in Central Asia.

Severstal’s thick-sheet metal products of several types are used in the manufacture and installation of turbine water conduits for hydroelectric power plants. Parts from it will be operated in an aggressive environment - in water and conditions of seismic activity associated with the natural landscape of the location of the station. Rolled steel is supplied from mills 2800 and 5000 of the Cherepovets Metallurgical Plant (CherMK, part of the Severstal Russian Steel division).

“The Rogun HPP construction project is an international one. Now enterprises of Tajikistan, Russia and European states are involved in it. Severstal’s involvement in such a strategic initiative is a combination of responsibility and opportunity. The technical characteristics of our rolled metal products fully meet the customer’s expectations, but the dialogue continues. For example, in terms of applying the experience and welding technologies of our company, as well as considering the possibility of supplying high-strength and reinforcing bars by Severstal. Deliveries for such a critical facility will allow us to gain new experience that we can replicate on other projects, including future reconstruction of hydroelectric power plants in the region,” comments Evgeny Chernyakov, Severstal’s director for work with companies in the construction industry.

Rogun HPP is the eighth power plant in the HPP cascade on the river. Vakhsh. It is planned to be used as a multipurpose hydroelectric complex, including for power generation, water regulation, flood risk reduction and drought mitigation.

The project takes into account the complex natural conditions of the construction area: high seismicity, geological and tectonic features of the region, a narrow mountain gorge, mudflow hazard, as well as a layer of rock salt lying at the base of the dam.
