Senate: Tashkent Needs “Smart” Traffic Lights and Expanded Public Transport
Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Senate Committee on Defense and Security conducted a comprehensive analysis of measures aimed at improving road safety, reducing traffic congestion, and modernizing the capital’s transport infrastructure.
During the meeting, officials highlighted that the rapid growth in the number of cars, a trend seen in megacities worldwide, necessitates the application of modern traffic management methods.
International experience demonstrates the high effectiveness of expanding metro systems, public transport, and Park & Ride facilities as tools to reduce pressure on urban road networks.
The discussion also identified key challenges facing Tashkent. It was noted that infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists remains underdeveloped, and the rollout of “smart” traffic lights—capable of dynamically adjusting traffic flows at busy intersections—has not yet been completed.
Participants emphasized that the most effective solution for the city’s transport issues is to encourage residents to shift from personal vehicles to public transport, alongside the rapid development of large parking zones at city entrances and near metro stations.
Experts believe that implementing these measures will not only reduce congestion but also enhance the safety of both pedestrians and drivers.
Following the discussion, specific objectives were formulated to optimize traffic flows, expand the use of public transport, implement intelligent traffic management systems, and strengthen the role of digital technologies in regulating Tashkent’s road situation.
