Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan ratified the Geneva protocol on prohibition of chemical weapons.
At the fifth plenary session of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis on June 19-th, the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On accession of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the protocol on prohibition of weapons asphyxiating, poisonous or other similar gases and bacteriological agents (Geneva, June 17, 1925)” was approved.
The protocol is a document which reinforce and supplement the requirements of the Convention on the prohibition of the development, production and stockpiling of bacteriological (biological) and toxin weapons and on their destruction, signed on April 10, 1972 in the cities of Moscow, London and Washington.
Currently, 142 countries joined the Geneva Protocol, including from the CIS countries - Armenia, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Kyrgyzstan.
The Senate mentioned that the adoption of the Law is important in the effective provision and development of the republic’s defense sphere, and will also be an important step towards strengthening the equal participation of Uzbekistan in the international community.
Adherence to this protocol also complies with the norms of national legislation in the field of defense and does not contradict the requirements of international treaties, which entered into force according to the law, they added in the upper house.
