Senate ratifies Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- The Senate approved the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan “On ratification of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (Stockholm, May 22, 2001)”.

It was noted that the ratification of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (Stockholm, May 22, 2001) is one of the conditions of the European Union for Uzbekistan to get additional tariff preferences for the supply of domestic goods to the European market within the framework of the General System of Preferences "GSP +".

The Convention prohibits or significantly restricts the production and use of the 26 most dangerous chemical compounds used in agriculture and the chemical industry and adversely affecting human health and the state of land and water resources.

It was emphasized that ratification of the Convention would require the Republic of Uzbekistan to provide the Convention Secretariat with information on the available quantities of hazardous chemicals; the prohibition or restriction of the treatment of persistent organic pollutants, as well as their environmentally sound disposal in accordance with the National Action Plan, developed within 2 years after the entry into force of the Convention. The law is approved by the senators.
