Senate members approve the Law on Combating Human Trafficking

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) -- At the sixth plenary session of the Senate, the discussion was also centered on the Law of the Republic of Uzbekistan "On combating human trafficking".

It was noted that the need to develop a new version of the Law is due to the fact that today specific provisions on protection and assistance to victims of trafficking in persons have not been regulated, the features of combating trafficking in minors, the legal status of identification, assistance and protection of victims of trafficking in persons have not been determined.

In the new edition of the Law, attention is paid to precisely these aspects. It clearly defines the basic concepts and principles of this area, the norms of its state regulation, as well as the norms concerning the authorized state bodies, the National Commission, territorial commissions and the National Rapporteur.

It is known that currently more than 9 thousand non-governmental non-profit organizations operate in the republic, about 100 of them work in the field of combating human trafficking. The Law also defines non-governmental non-profit organizations as organizations that provide assistance to state bodies carrying out activities in this direction, clearly discloses their powers and tasks.

At the same time, in contrast to the current Law, the new edition discloses the procedure for social rehabilitation and adaptation of victims of trafficking in persons, measures to ensure the confidentiality of information about victims of trafficking in persons and their safety.

Moreover, a separate chapter defines the concepts of identification and referral of victims of trafficking, which were previously absent in national legislation.

The adoption of the Law will contribute to the guaranteed protection of the rights and legitimate interests of citizens who have become victims of human trafficking.

The members of the Senate approved this Law.
