Senate Discusses Implementation of Gender Equality Strategy Through 2030

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — The Senate of the Oliy Majlis hosted a meeting of the Republican Commission on Enhancing the Role of Women in Society, Gender Equality, and Family Affairs. The meeting was chaired by the Commission’s head, Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis Tanzila Narbaeva.

The session featured a comprehensive and critical discussion of the implementation of Uzbekistan’s Strategy for Achieving Gender Equality through 2030.

In her remarks, Tanzila Narbaeva noted that under the leadership of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev, Uzbekistan has undertaken large-scale efforts to support women, enhance their social and economic participation, and create conditions for realizing their full potential.

Particular attention has been given to strengthening the legislative and institutional framework for protecting women’s rights and interests. More than 200 comprehensive measures have been implemented to elevate the social status and authority of women in society.

The share of women in higher education has grown significantly:
– at the bachelor’s level — from 38% to 53%,
– at the master’s level — from 34% to 66%,
– the number of female doctoral students increased from 584 to 4,129.

Women’s participation in the economy has also expanded — the number of women entrepreneurs rose from 69,000 to 262,000.

In politics, the share of women in political parties increased from 30% to 41%, and in parliament — from 16.4% to 34%.

Thanks to these results, Uzbekistan advanced in the Inter-Parliamentary Union’s “Women in Parliament” ranking from 130th to 38th place, improving its position by 92 spots among 193 countries.

Furthermore, in the latest World Bank Gender Equality Report, Uzbekistan was included among the world’s top five most dynamically progressing countries in this area.

The meeting also discussed the ratification of international treaties aimed at strengthening gender equality, as well as measures to expand women’s entrepreneurship, employment, and the prevention of gender-based violence.

Relevant officials were instructed to develop a comprehensive program of measures to implement the Gender Equality Strategy in 2026.

The document envisions:
– increasing women’s representation in public service and the national talent pool,
– expanding participation in education and the IT sector,
– developing digital and economic skills,
– improving mechanisms for preventing harassment and violence.

Special attention was given to preparations for the international campaign “Sixteen Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence,” which will take place from November 25 to December 10 this year.

As part of the campaign, information and educational activities will be organized to combat violence, promote gender equality, and protect women’s rights.

During the session, reports by heads of national and local government bodies were heard, current results reviewed, and key priorities for the future outlined.

Following the discussions, the Commission adopted a corresponding resolution.
