Senate Discusses Cooperation with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.com) — Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbaeva held a meeting with Matilda Bogner, Regional Representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Central Asia.

During the talks, the relevance of the initiatives and proposals put forward by President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev in his address to the 80th session of the UN General Assembly on human rights issues was emphasized.

The parties reviewed the current state and future prospects of cooperation in this sphere, including support for reforms, the fulfillment of international obligations, and the expansion of institutional cooperation between the Senate and UN bodies.

Special attention was given to the draft National Human Rights Strategy until 2030, being developed with broad public and international expert participation, as well as to the introduction of new forms of parliamentary oversight over the implementation of international agreements.

Matilda Bogner highly commended Uzbekistan’s efforts in eradicating forced labor, modernizing the judicial system, ensuring transparency, and strengthening dialogue between state institutions and civil society.

The discussion also touched upon further areas of cooperation, including training programs for judges and law enforcement officials, the parliament’s participation in international reporting, and greater involvement of civil society in processes related to the protection of human rights and freedoms.
